Be cautious when opening emails from unknown sources.
- Do not open or launch attachments from an unknown source. If in doubt, delete the attachment.
- Do not provide personal information, passwords, or financial information in unsolicited emails, pop-up windows on the Internet, phone calls, or faxes. Identity thieves are adept at asking you for your information in such a way that the request seems official and urgent. If you are not familiar with the person requesting information, never give out any information, no matter how official it seems.
- Do not provide your email address to websites without reading their privacy and security policies for how your email will be used and shared.
- If you receive an email from a company with whom you are familiar, do not use the links provided in the email to provide personal or account information. Instead, log in directly to your account on the company’s website and provide information from there.
- Shred unnecessary financial documents such as bank statements and credit card offers.
- If regular bills or statements stop appearing in the mail, contact those companies and verify your address information.
- Promptly remove mail received in your mailbox and do not leave outgoing mail in your mailbox. This prevents criminals from stealing your personal information.

IF YOU ARE A VICTIM OF IDENTITY THEFT:
According to the US Government’s central website for information regarding identity theft, if you suspect that your identity has been stolen, you should immediately:
- Contact the credit bureaus.
- Contact the fraud departments of each of the three major credit bureaus and report that your identity has been stolen.
- Ask them to place a fraud alert on your file and to deny any new credit without first contacting you for approval.
- Review all accounts on file at the Credit Bureau. If any accounts were fraudulently opened or accessed, contact the security departments for each of those institutions. Close those account and open new ones, placing passwords on your new accounts.
- File a police report in the area where the identity theft took place. Get a copy of the report to provide to banks, credit card companies, etc. in the future if they need proof of the crime.
- If your financial information has been compromised, contact your financial institutions and credit card issuers to close your accounts and open new ones. Review your statements and monitor your transactions.
